About Zen drawing

Zen drawing refers to realistic drawing as a meditation technique. You use your eyes to achieve a meditative state, just by changing the way you look. When you try to concentrate fully on seeing, you will notice that you become more silent. You start to see without any projections of the mind. It feels like you become one with the subject.

Zen drawing can be practiced by everyone. Even without any talent or experience you will be able to draw. It is the amazing result of using the drawing reflex: your hands automatically follow the movements of your eyes. This is a way of practical learning that gives immediate result, as long as you are silent. That's why meditation experience can be an advantage in this practice.

You will find the best subjects for Zen drawing in nature, because of the abundance of irrational shapes. Their natural energy is another reason why those objects and shapes are inspiring for Zen drawing. When you are learning to see more clearly, you will be delighted by new discoveries and glimpses of insight.

I personally got into Zen drawing after reading Frederick Franck's book 'Zen seeing, Zen drawing'. He was the first to introduce the drawing reflex. As an artist, I wondered if I already drew in the way Franck described. It was after I read Betty Edwards book 'Drawing on the right side of the brain' and a moment of insight when I drew a piece of wood in a garden and I realised: Zen drawing is totally different. I thought it was a perfect and great experience, and Zen drawing has dramatically changed my life and artwork since then. For those of you that want to experience what Zen drawing can do, I have developed a few practical exercises that can help you finding your own drawing reflex.

In september 2012, I published a book about Zen drawing with Asoka publishers in the Netherlands. I hope it will be translated in English soon!

With special thanks to Willem Radder for helping me with the articles!

I love to meet other people who are into Zen drawing. I created a  facebook community. Sign in if you like!
